Why 5.56 Goes Through Less Drywall Than 9mm
The Short Answer
Lightweight 5.56 rounds traveling at 3,000+ fps fragment or tumble when they hit drywall, dumping energy and breaking apart. Heavy 9mm rounds at 1,100 fps punch straight through like a drill bit. The rifle round is actually less dangerous to people behind walls than the handgun round. This is counterintuitive, well-documented, and matters enormously for home defense.
The Test Data: 5.56 vs 9mm Through Walls
This isn't theoretical. Multiple independent tests with calibrated setups confirm the same result.
The USCCA ran a controlled test firing both 9mm FMJ and 5.56 FMJ through five simulated interior walls (each wall = two sheets of ½" drywall with a 3.5" air gap). Both rounds penetrated all five walls — but the 5.56 showed significant tumbling and fragmentation after the first wall, while the 9mm punched clean holes through every layer.
An AllOutdoor test measured the gap even more dramatically: 9mm 124gr FMJ penetrated 22 layers of drywall while .223 V-Max penetrated only 13 layers — 40% fewer layers for the rifle round.
A third independent test by How-I-Did-It used Fiocchi 40gr V-Max .223 and found the round fragmented inside the first wall with fragments barely reaching the second wall. Meanwhile, .45 ACP FMJ — an even heavier, slower pistol round — penetrated all three test walls cleanly.

The Physics: Why the Rifle Round Breaks Up
The answer comes down to two variables: velocity and construction.
A 9mm 124gr FMJ exits the muzzle at roughly 1,100–1,150 fps. It's a dense, heavy, round-nosed slug designed to punch through things. When it hits drywall, the impact velocity isn't fast enough to cause the bullet to deform or break apart. It just keeps going — through the first wall, the second wall, and however many walls are behind that.
A 5.56 M193 55gr FMJ exits the muzzle at roughly 3,100 fps from a 16" barrel. That's nearly three times the velocity of the pistol round, but the bullet weighs less than half as much. When this light, fast projectile hits drywall, it yaws (turns sideways), and the violent deceleration causes the thin copper jacket to rupture at the cannelure — the crimping groove around the bullet's midsection.
M193 vs M855: Not All 5.56 Is Equal
M193's thin copper jacket has a weak point at the cannelure. At sufficient velocity, yaw forces tear the bullet apart at this groove, creating devastating tissue damage but rapid energy loss in barriers. M855's steel penetrator resists this deformation entirely — it was literally designed to punch through harder materials.
The Fragmentation Velocity Threshold
M193 fragmentation is velocity-dependent. The threshold is approximately 2,700 fps (some testing suggests 2,500–2,600 fps for Federal and Wolf Gold). This has direct implications for barrel length:

From a 16" barrel in a home defense scenario (ranges of 5–25 feet), M193 is well above fragmentation velocity and will break apart in drywall. From a 10.5" barrel, you're right at the threshold — fragmentation is still likely at contact distances, but the margin is thin.
What This Means for Home Defense
This data leads to a conclusion that surprises most people: a properly loaded AR-15 can be a better home defense option than a 9mm handgun from an overpenetration standpoint.

The Counterargument: Rifle Rounds Aren't Magic
Some important caveats before you swap your nightstand pistol for an AR-15 based on drywall tests alone:
Muzzle blast and concussion. Firing a 5.56 rifle indoors without hearing protection will cause immediate, potentially permanent hearing damage. A 9mm is loud; a 5.56 in a hallway is disorienting. If your home defense gun is an AR-15, suppressors and electronic ear-pro near the bed are worth considering.
Overpenetration isn't the only factor. A missed 9mm round going through two walls is bad. A fragmented 5.56 round that hit its target but sent jacket fragments through one wall is also bad, just less bad. No residential wall construction stops any centerfire round reliably. The best defense against overpenetration is hitting your target.
Maneuverability. A 16" barrel AR-15 is 33–35" long. Clearing corners in a hallway with that is a real skill. Pistols and AR pistols with braces are more practical for room-to-room movement. The tradeoff: shorter barrels reduce velocity and may push you below the fragmentation threshold.
The Bottom Line
If you choose 5.56 for home defense: Use Hornady V-Max or M193 from a 16" barrel. Never M855. Understand that drywall test results show dramatically less penetration than 9mm FMJ — but the best overpenetration plan is still accurate shot placement, a clear background, and knowing what's behind your target.
If you use 9mm for home defense: Switch from FMJ to quality hollow points (Federal HST, Speer Gold Dot). JHP loads reduce wall penetration significantly versus FMJ, though they still penetrate more drywall than fragmenting 5.56 loads.
