What You'll Learn

  • Which defensive loads actually expand from a 3.1" barrel (with gel test data)
  • The best budget range ammo that runs reliably in every P365 variant
  • Why 124gr is the sweet spot — and when 147gr makes sense
  • Ammo differences between the P365, P365X, P365XL, and XMacro
  • Loads to avoid — including one that Hornady says not to use in short barrels

The SIG P365 is the best-selling handgun in America, with an estimated 2 million-plus units sold in the past two years. It redefined the micro-compact category and spawned a family of variants — the P365X, P365XL, XMacro, and the new Comp models.

Yet despite that massive install base, most "best 9mm ammo" guides test from 4-inch or longer barrels. That's a problem. The standard P365 has a 3.1-inch barrel, and that shorter tube means less velocity — which means some hollow points that expand perfectly from a Glock 19 will fail to open up from your P365.

This guide is different. Every defensive load recommended here has been tested from short barrels (3.1"–3.7") with documented gel test results. We're not guessing. We're matching the right ammo to the right barrel length.

Quick Picks

Short on time? Here's the cheat sheet.

Category Our Pick Why
Best Overall Federal HST 124gr Standard Pressure Consistent 0.62"–0.64" expansion, 16.5" penetration from 3.1" barrels. The gold standard.
Best for Carry Federal HST 124gr +P ~1,034 fps from 3.1" barrels. 14.9"–16" penetration with 0.638"–0.663" expansion.
Best Budget Defense SIG V-Crown 365 115gr Designed specifically for P365 barrel length and powder burn rate. Meets FBI spec.
Best Range Ammo Blazer Brass 115gr FMJ Feeds reliably, clean-burning, consistent. Cheapest brass-cased option for volume shooting.
Best for XL / XMacro Federal HST 147gr Standard Pressure The 3.7" barrel gives enough velocity for reliable 147gr expansion. Softest recoil.

What to Look for in P365 Ammo

Barrel length matters more than you think

The P365 family spans three barrel lengths: 3.1 inches (P365 standard and P365X), 3.7 inches (P365XL and XMacro standard), and 3.1 inches with a compensator (XMacro Comp). That might seem like a small difference, but the jump from 3.1" to 3.7" typically adds 50–90 fps of velocity. That extra speed can be the difference between a hollow point that opens up reliably and one that doesn't.

For the standard P365 and P365X, you want defensive ammo that's been proven to expand at velocities around 1,000–1,050 fps. For the XL and XMacro, you have more flexibility — velocities in the 1,050–1,120 fps range open up options like heavier 147gr loads.

The 124gr sweet spot

Here's a counterintuitive finding from short-barrel testing: in some subcompact pistols, 124gr loads are actually faster than 115gr loads. The reason? Heavier bullets accelerate more slowly, which gives the powder more time to burn before the bullet exits the barrel. In a 3.1" tube, where every fraction of an inch of burn time matters, 124gr loads make better use of the available barrel.

This is why 124gr is the default recommendation for the P365 in defensive loads. It hits the sweet spot of velocity, penetration, and expansion from short barrels.

SIG says +P is fine

SIG rates the entire P365 platform for +P ammunition. That means 9mm loaded to a max pressure of 38,500 PSI (versus the standard 35,000 PSI). If you carry +P, just know that the sharper recoil takes more practice to manage in a micro-compact, and you should replace your recoil spring at more frequent intervals.

Steel case warning: SIG does not officially recommend steel-cased ammo. User reports are mixed — many P365 owners run steel at the range without issues, but some report extraction problems. For a carry gun, stick to brass.

Best Defensive Ammo for the P365

These are the defensive loads we recommend, ranked by performance from 3.1" barrels. All gel test data comes from published tests by ShootingTheBull410 and The Firearm Blog.

Load Velocity (3.1") Bare Gel Penetration Expanded Diameter
Federal HST 124gr +P ~1,034 fps 14.9–16.0" 0.638–0.663"
Federal HST 124gr Std 1,017–1,051 fps 16.5" 0.62–0.64"
SIG V-Crown 365 115gr ~1,050 fps Meets FBI spec Optimized for short barrels
Federal HST 147gr Std ~894 fps 15.6–18.1" 0.686–0.722" (bare)

1. Federal HST 124gr — The #1 pick for the P365

Best Overall Defensive
Federal Premium HST 124gr 9mm
9mm Luger 124gr JHP Standard Pressure 20 rounds/box

The most consistent short-barrel performer in independent gel testing. From the P365's 3.1" barrel, the 124gr HST produces velocities around 1,017–1,051 fps — plenty to drive reliable expansion to 0.62"–0.64" with 16.5 inches of penetration. That's right in the FBI's 12"–18" ideal window.

The standard pressure version is our overall top pick because it delivers nearly identical terminal performance to the +P at a lower recoil impulse. In a micro-compact that already snaps, that matters. The +P variant (also excellent) clocks around 1,034 fps from 3.1" barrels, expanding to 0.638"–0.663" with 14.9"–16" penetration.

Either one is a great choice. If you can manage the recoil, the +P gives you a small performance edge. If you want faster follow-up shots, go standard pressure.

2. SIG V-Crown 365 115gr — Made for your gun

Best Budget Defensive
SIG SAUER V-Crown 365 Elite 115gr 9mm
9mm Luger 115gr JHP P365-Optimized 20 rounds/box

SIG developed this load specifically for the P365 platform. The powder charge is tuned for optimal burn in a 3.1" barrel — so you're not losing velocity to unburned powder like you would with ammo designed for longer barrels. Meets FBI protocol specifications for penetration and expansion.

~$0.90 /rd

The V-Crown 365 is unique because it's one of the only defensive loads designed from the ground up for a specific micro-compact pistol. The powder burn rate is optimized for the P365's 3.1" barrel, which means less muzzle flash and more efficient velocity compared to loads that were developed in longer test barrels.

It's also typically cheaper than the Federal HST, making it a good option if you want to practice with your carry ammo without spending $1+ per round.

3. Speer Gold Dot 124gr — The law enforcement standard

LE Proven
Speer Gold Dot 124gr 9mm
9mm Luger 124gr JHP Standard Pressure 20 rounds/box

One of the most widely issued law enforcement rounds in America. The Gold Dot's bonded core construction means the jacket won't separate from the lead core on impact — a real concern with barrier-blind scenarios. Reliable feeder in virtually every 9mm on the market.

~$1.05 /rd

The Gold Dot has decades of real-world performance data behind it. It feeds reliably in tight-tolerance micro-compacts and the bonded construction makes it less likely to fragment. From 4" barrels, the 124gr +P variant clocks 1,150–1,220 fps with 15–16" of penetration and 0.54"–0.58" expansion. From the P365's 3.1" barrel, expect roughly 50–70 fps less, which still puts it well within the expansion threshold.

Best Range Ammo for the P365

Your carry ammo costs $1+ per round. You're not dumping 200 rounds of HST at the range every weekend. Here's what to shoot for practice.

1. Blazer Brass 115gr FMJ — The reliable workhorse

Best Range Ammo
CCI Blazer Brass 115gr 9mm FMJ
9mm Luger 115gr FMJ Brass-Cased 350 rounds/bucket or 1,000 round case

Clean-burning, consistent, and it feeds in everything. Blazer Brass is the default recommendation for P365 range ammo because it simply works — no feeding issues, no crazy muzzle flash, and brass cases mean your range won't complain.

~$0.22 /rd

2. Federal American Eagle 115gr FMJ

Another rock-solid range option. Federal American Eagle is one of the most widely available training rounds in America. Consistent velocities, clean primers, and the brass is excellent for reloaders. Usually priced within a penny or two of Blazer Brass.

3. Winchester White Box (USA Forged) 115gr FMJ

The classic "white box" 9mm. Winchester has been making this round forever. It runs fine in the P365, though some shooters report it's slightly dirtier than Blazer or Federal. A totally acceptable budget option — just clean your gun afterward.

Buy in bulk. At current March 2026 pricing, budget 9mm FMJ runs around $0.22/rd when you buy 1,000-round cases. That's the sweet spot for cost per round — avoid buying 50-round boxes at the gun counter unless you have no other option.

P365XL & XMacro: Does the Longer Barrel Change Things?

Yes — meaningfully.

The P365XL and standard XMacro use a 3.7-inch barrel, which gives you an extra 50–90 fps over the 3.1" models. That velocity bump opens up the 147gr category for defensive use.

Federal HST 147gr becomes viable from 3.7" barrels

The 147gr HST is one of the best-expanding hollow points in gel testing — from 3.1" barrels, it delivers stunning 0.686"–0.722" expansion in bare gel. The problem? Through heavy clothing (denim testing), it was inconsistent from the shorter barrel, with some tests showing expansion as low as 0.459".

From the XL's 3.7" barrel, the additional velocity brings the 147gr HST into reliable expansion territory even through barriers. If you own the P365XL or XMacro, the Federal HST 147gr is our top pick. It offers the largest expanded diameter of any load tested, with the softest felt recoil of any of our defensive picks (heavy bullets produce a slower "push" rather than a sharp "snap").

XMacro Comp note: The XMacro Comp uses a 3.1" barrel with a built-in compensator. The comp reduces muzzle rise but does NOT increase velocity — the bullet exits after 3.1 inches of rifling, same as the standard P365. Use the 3.1" barrel recommendations (124gr HST or V-Crown) for the XMacro Comp.

What to Avoid

Hornady Critical Duty 135gr +P

This is one of the most popular defensive rounds in America — and Hornady themselves say not to use it in barrels under 4 inches. The Critical Duty was designed for full-size service pistols. From a 3.1" barrel, it doesn't generate enough velocity for reliable expansion. If you want Hornady, use Critical Defense (different product, designed for short barrels) instead.

Remington Golden Saber in any weight

Remington's ammo quality has been inconsistent since the company's bankruptcy and acquisition. Multiple reports of lot-to-lot variation. There are too many proven, consistent options to gamble on Golden Saber in a gun you might need to save your life.

Any "novelty" defensive round

RIP ammo, G2 Research, Lehigh Xtreme Defense — these use unconventional bullet designs that lack the decades of gel testing and real-world validation that HST, Gold Dot, and Critical Defense have. Some of them fragment instead of expanding, which can reduce penetration below the FBI 12-inch minimum. For a carry gun, stick with the proven performers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the SIG P365 shoot +P ammo?

Yes. SIG rates the P365 for +P ammunition. However, +P will increase felt recoil and may accelerate wear on the recoil spring. SIG recommends replacing the recoil spring at more frequent intervals if you shoot +P regularly. +P+ is not a SAAMI standard — use at your own risk.

Can you shoot steel case ammo in the SIG P365?

SIG does not officially recommend steel-cased ammo. User reports are mixed — many P365 owners run steel case at the range without issues, but some report extraction problems. For a carry gun, stick to brass-cased ammo for reliability. Save the steel case for your AK.

What's the difference between the P365 variants for ammo?

The P365 standard and P365X share a 3.1" barrel. The P365XL uses a 3.7" barrel. The XMacro ships with either 3.1" (Comp) or 3.7" (standard). The longer barrel adds 50–90 fps, making 147gr defensive loads more viable due to better expansion at higher velocities.

Is Hornady Critical Duty good for the P365?

No. Hornady explicitly states that Critical Duty 135gr +P is designed for barrels 4 inches and longer. From the P365's 3.1" barrel, velocity is too low for reliable expansion. Use Hornady Critical Defense instead — it's specifically designed for short barrels and uses a polymer-filled cavity (FTX bullet) that initiates expansion at lower velocities.

What grain weight is best for the P365?

For the standard P365 and P365X (3.1" barrel): 124gr is the sweet spot for defensive ammo. It expands reliably at the velocities short barrels produce. For range ammo, 115gr is the most affordable and runs great.

If you have the P365XL (3.7" barrel), 147gr becomes a viable defensive option — it delivers the largest expanded diameter and the softest recoil.

How much ammo should I buy for my P365?

For a new P365 owner: start with 2 boxes (40 rounds) of your chosen defensive ammo to function-test in your specific gun, plus 200–500 rounds of range FMJ to build proficiency. After you've confirmed reliability, keep 2–3 loaded magazines of defensive ammo and buy range ammo in 1,000-round cases for the best per-round price.
